Over A Century of Trust

From a $1,000 investment on Sixth Street to five generations of family stewardship — this is the story of Fincher & Ozment.

A Thousand Dollars & A Dream

Dr. Thomas Jefferson Ozment handed his son Truman — an accomplished engraver — $1,000 to start his own business. Truman partnered with his brother-in-law William H. Fincher, and together they opened Fincher & Ozment Jewelry Co. on Sixth Street in the heart of downtown Tuscaloosa.

Cases of Rich Woods & Curving Glass

Those early customers loved the experience. Exquisite cases of rich woods and curving glass, beautiful high wall cases with glass doors that slid upward as if by magic. Bright gold, sparkling gems, and gentlemen whose first concern was pleasing their customers.

1930s

Syrup Cans Under the Counter

The store relocated to 515 Greensboro. The Great Depression had descended and cash was scarce — customers paid their accounts with commodities. Cans of syrup, bushels of produce stored under the counters. The store stayed open until the last customer left, often past 9pm on Saturdays.

1960–70s

Growth Through Competition

The business grew steadily even as competition arrived — McFarland Mall opened, followed by University Mall with 101 specialty stores. The number of jewelers doubled overnight. Fincher & Ozment chose to stay put downtown — arguably the wisest decision Tommy ever made.

1985

18 Inches of Fresh Concrete

A "six-week" downtown revitalization began January 15th and dragged on for months. Customers navigated around freshly-poured concrete just to get in. No parking for two blocks. Volume plummeted — but Fincher & Ozment held on until the street reopened that September.

1988

Carrying the Weight Forward

The oldest partner, James, retired in spring. A leveraged buyout took place — Tommy Ozment assumed the debt and the store carried on, as it always had.

2002

A New Address. The Same Family.

In October 2002, Fincher & Ozment moved into their current location in the Tuscaloosa Galleria — watching the city transform once more with the rise of football and McFarland's reconstruction, steady and unchanged at heart.

Today

120 Years & Still Counting

Some might say being in business for over a hundred years makes us old. We like to think it makes us the most experienced hometown jewelry store in Tuscaloosa. Families who once called us to select a gift now send their grandchildren in — knowing they'll be treated the same way their family always has been.

"

We like the emotional part best — making people happy, sometimes keeping them happy. It is an enjoyable people-oriented business, one of the very few full-service, customer-assisted businesses remaining. I don't know any other I would like as much.

What We
Stand For

These aren't just words on a wall, they're the principles that have guided every decision we've made for over 120 years.

The price on the tag is the real price. No games, no pressure, no hidden agendas. Just straightforward, honest jewelry buying the way it should always be.

Every piece we carry is held to an exacting standard — from the precision of the cut to the integrity of the setting. We believe fine jewelry should be made to last generations, not just seasons.

We've been part of this community for over 120 years, and that means something to us. We show up — for milestones, for celebrations, and for the quiet moments that deserve to be marked with something beautiful.

We don't just sell jewelry — we become part of your story. From the first visit to the anniversary decades later, we're here for every chapter, with the same familiar faces and the same genuine care.
